Losing Weight Will Not Be One My Resolutions, Here’s Why

With the new year around the corner, many of us are laying out some goals that we want to start once the calendar changes. Health and fitness are among the most popular new year's resolutions, often accompanied with the intent to lose weight. This new year, while fitness will be on my list of resolutions, weight loss won’t be the goal. Here are three reasons I want to be active that have nothing to do with the scale:

Manage anxiety. Like many mamas, multi-tasking is what I do day in and day out. Juggling work, a toddler, my partner, household duties, friendships, etc. causes more than just a little anxiety not to mention, I’m just prone to worry without specific stressors. Exercise does wonders to help improve your mental health, including decreasing symptoms of anxiety, depression and other emotional issues. For newly post-partum mamas, something as simple as walking for 30 minutes 3 times a week can help with the baby blues or symptoms of post-partum depression and anxiety.

Increase energy. I often “burn the candle at both ends,” as they say. Between waking up early or staying up late to complete tasks, the sleepless nights due to a sick little one, and the mental load of motherhood, I’m tired. You would think that exerting high amounts of energy would make you tired (and yes, sometimes after races, I take a long nap), but on the weeks I work out regularly, I have more energy. Working out causes an increase of hormone production that gives us a lift of energy post exercise that lingers.

Tangible progress. When I’m working out regularly, whether its running or weight lifting, I can measure the results. I’m able to increase the weight on the machines, do more reps, or run farther without dying. I love feeling stronger. I get so proud when I am able to move to the next level in a workout. I feel accomplished and excited to keep going to see how far I can go. This progress I make is entirely in my control (unlike so many things).

For me, the numbers on a dumbbell are much more exciting than the numbers on a scale. One of my favorite body positive influencers, Cece Olisa, has a saying “Don’t wait for your weight to start to living your life.” That’s how I plan to lean into 2019.
